7 Types of Rest (Why Sleep Isn’t Always Enough) 🥱
If you’re sleeping but still feel exhausted, you’re not imagining it. Many people assume rest simply means sleep, yet fatigue can persist even with good sleep.
This can be confusing and discouraging, especially when you feel like you are “doing what you should” and still feel drained.
MD and researcher Sandra Dalton-Smith explains that rest is not a single experience; it comes in multiple forms, each meeting a different human need. She shares that we’ve incorrectly decided that rest = sleep, but that some forms of rest are actually more active and provide restoration in different ways.
It’s about decreasing tension so you can handle life’s demands. Understanding the different types of rest can help you recognize what your body and mind are truly asking for, and allow you to respond with more precision and compassion. It’s an invitation to get to know yourself more and learn what charges you specifically.
7 types of rest:
🛌 Physical rest: Sleep, gentle movement, stretching, releasing muscle tension, or intentional stillness.
🧠 Mental rest: Quieting mental chatter, reducing decision-making, taking breaks from thinking, and offloading thoughts into a journal.
💛 Emotional rest: Being authentic, expressing feelings, and not performing strength.
🫶 Social rest: Spending time with people who charge your battery or choosing solitude.
👀 Sensory rest: Reducing noise, screens, bright lights, and overstimulation.
🎨 Creative rest: Consuming beauty or inspiration without needing to produce, engaging in a creative hobby for leisure (not production).
✨ Spiritual rest: Connecting to meaning, purpose, nature, or something larger than yourself.
Avoiding burnout can require more than just physical rest and nourishment. If you’re getting physical rest and still not feeling recharged, it can be a call to explore different types of rest.
✅ Action step: Ask yourself: Which type of rest do I need most right now, and how can I offer a small dose of it today?
