Your Body Isn't Broken. It's Been Paying Attention: Understanding Your Nervous System

One of the most quietly painful things about living with chronic stress, burnout, or trauma responses is the layer of shame that often comes with it. The sense that you should be over this by now. That other people are handling things fine. That your reactions are too much, your exhaustion disproportionate, your body somehow failing at what it's supposed to do.

Here's a reframe worth sitting with: your nervous system has been doing exactly what nervous systems are designed to do. It noticed things were hard. It adapted. It protected you.

Hypervigilance (that constant scanning for threat, the inability to fully rest) is an intelligent response to an environment that has felt genuinely unsafe. Shutdown and numbness are what a system does when it's been overwhelmed and can't escape. Anxiety is threat-detection working overtime, often because the threats have been real.

None of this is malfunction. All of it is adaptation.

The complications arise when the adaptations outlive the circumstances that made them necessary, or when the circumstances never fully resolve, which for a lot of people is the more honest story. When your body stays braced even when things are "fine." When you can't access rest or joy or presence even when they're right in front of you.

But you can't shame a nervous system into healing. Judgment doesn't create safety, it creates more threat. What does work is understanding, consistency, and giving the system enough gentle evidence, over time, that it's okay to come down from high alert.

The starting point isn't trying harder. It's understanding what's actually happening, and meeting it with something closer to curiosity than criticism.

Action Step: Place one hand on your chest, or wherever feels comfortable. Take a breath and let yourself say (silently or out loud) "You've been working hard. I'm not against you." It might feel strange. Try it anyway. Your nervous system responds to tone as much as words, and this is a different tone than most of us offer ourselves.

The Vitamin C and Brain Connection

A large new study suggests that Vitamin C might not just have a great song about being friends forever, but the nutrient might impact brain aging (that's a bad joke for my fellow millennials).

Researchers in Japan scanned the brains and tested the blood of over 2,000 adults aged 64 and up. They found a consistent pattern: people with lower vitamin C levels in their blood tended to have less gray matter and weaker connections in a brain network tied to memory and attention. That held up even after accounting for age, education, and physical activity.

It is important to highlight that this is an observational study, so it can't prove vitamin C protects your brain; it only shows the two travel together. Low levels could be a cause, or those with higher levels might just eat a healthier diet. Either way, this is one more reason to keep eating nutrient-dense foods.

You don't need supplements, as vitamin C is easy to get from food: citrus, berries, kiwi, red bell peppers, broccoli, and tomatoes are all loaded with it.

Action Step: Add one vitamin C-rich food to your plate today. A handful of berries, some sliced bell pepper, or an orange all do the job, no pills required.
