You're Not Tired. You're Dysregulated: Understanding Your Nervous System

[In this new weekly series, we’ll explore and understand the nervous system together.]

There's a specific kind of exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix. You rest, but you don't recover. You take the weekend off, but Monday arrives and you feel exactly the same, or worse. If this sounds familiar, there's something important worth knowing: this isn't a willpower problem. It's not even really a sleep problem. It might be a nervous system problem.

Your nervous system is the command centre for how you experience everything: safety, connection, energy, emotion, thought. When it's been running in overdrive for too long (scanning for threat, managing stress, carrying the world) it doesn't simply reset when you lie down. It stays stuck. Braced. Waiting for the next thing.

The word "dysregulated" sounds clinical, but what it actually means is surprisingly simple: your system got pushed outside the zone where it functions well, and it hasn't found its way back. Not because you're doing anything wrong. Not because you're weak or broken. But because you've been carrying a lot, probably for a long time, and your body is telling you about it.

The tiredness you can't shake? That might be it. The inability to fully relax even when nothing is technically wrong? That too.

The sense that you're going through the motions without really being there? Your nervous system, asking for something different.

This series exists to help you understand what's actually happening, not in a clinical way, but in a way that helps your own experience start to make more sense. Because when you understand what your system is doing and why, you stop fighting yourself. And that's usually where things begin to shift.

Action Step: The next time you notice the tiredness that sleep doesn't fix, or the inability to settle even when you have space to, try naming it: "My system is working hard right now." Not as a diagnosis. Just as a small act of recognition. Seeing what’s happening with compassion, makes space for something new.

Less Than 20% of People Get Enough of This

You might already be getting your five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day, but still be missing out on one of the most important compounds for heart health.

A large international study published in June 2026 found that fewer than 20% of people consume enough flavanols. These are natural plant compounds strongly linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

So what is the target? COSMOS study, the largest clinical trial to examine flavanols, found that consuming 500 milligrams of flavanols per day lowered the risk of death from heart disease. But most people fall well short, even those eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, because some foods are much higher in flavanols than others.

The richest sources of flavonols are plums, cranberries, blackberries, broad beans, cherries, strawberries, blueberries, apples with skin, pinto beans, fava beans and green tea.

Adding in some of these foods can help boost your flavanol intake. For example, just 1 cup of green tea will give you about 250mg of flavanols, getting you halfway to that 500mg daily target.

Action Step: Pick one flavanol-rich food from the list above and add it to your daily routine this week.
