Assumptions: Escaping Thought Traps for Better Mental Health

In this series, we explore common thinking patterns (cognitive biases) that can limit well-being and practice loosening its grip to empower our thoughts, increase resilience, and live to the fullest.

Our minds naturally try to predict, interpret, and make sense of the world. But sometimes, this process turns into assumptions: quick conclusions we treat as truth without fully examining them. Over time, these thought patterns can quietly shape mood, confidence, and emotional well-being.

Assumptions can influence how you see yourself, others, and the future. When left unchecked, they can reinforce anxiety, self-doubt, and discouragement. Learning to notice them creates space for more balanced thinking.

Common places assumptions show up:

• ⚒️Assuming your abilities are limited or fixed
🪞Believing the future will repeat past disappointments
😬Thinking you know what others are thinking or feeling
😡Interpreting silence, tone, or behavior negatively
🔮Deciding outcomes before events unfold

Ways to gently loosen assumption-based thinking:

🥠Pause and ask: Is this a fact or an assumption (interpretation)?
• 🛣️Look for alternative explanations or possibilities to widen your perception
🤔Stay curious rather than certain
💙Allow uncertainty without rushing to a conclusion
🔥Gather facts or ask for clarity when possible

Assumptions can feel convincing, but they are not always accurate. Awareness creates choice.

Action step: Notice one assumption today and gently ask: What else could be true?

Fitness Friday: Elbow Position And Your Back Muscles

When doing rows (ie, pulling a weight towards you), your elbow position will influence which muscles are being more targeted.

Action step: Try out both elbow positions and see if you can feel the difference yourself.
