Do 1 thing today that is scary or uncomfortable.
You can absolutely do it; we believe in you!

2-Minute Self-Care Ritual: When You’re Triggered

Being triggered can feel overwhelming because your nervous system reacts as though something dangerous is happening now, even if the current moment is different from the past experience your body is connecting to.

Triggers can bring up intense emotion, urgency, fear, shutdown, shame, or defensiveness very quickly. And when that happens, it’s important to remember: your nervous system is trying to protect you, not punish you.

The goal is not to judge yourself for being triggered. The goal is to gently help your body reconnect with the present moment.

🛑 Step 1: Orient to Safety (30–45 seconds):
Pause and look around slowly.
Notice where you are right now. Name a few things you can see.
Remind yourself: “I am here in the present moment.”
Orientation helps your nervous system recognize that the past experience is not happening right now.

🫁 Step 2: Slow the Body Down (45 seconds):
Take one slow breath in and a longer breath out.
Press your feet into the floor or place a hand on your chest.
Focus on creating even a tiny bit more steadiness in your body.

💬 Step 3: Respond With Compassion (30–45 seconds):
Instead of asking “What’s wrong with me?” ask:
“What is this reaction trying to protect me from?”
Triggers often point toward places that need care, support, boundaries, healing, or gentleness.

You do not need to shame yourself for having a nervous system.

Action step: The next time you feel triggered, focus first on grounding and safety before trying to “figure it all out.”

One Question That Makes Healthy Choices Easier

Trying to force healthy habits through sheer willpower can work for a while, but it usually doesn't stick (that’s why most New Year’s Resolutions fail). This is because your habits are massively influenced by your sense of self, your identity: you do what you perceive someone like you does, almost without deciding.

Here's a small question that starts can help shift your identity to support the habits you want to take on: "What would X person do right now?"

So if you want to become healthier, you would ask yourself “What would a healthy person do right now?” Then take that action. The more you take those actions, the more you are aligning your identity with being a “healthy person,” which then makes it easier to keep taking those actions.

One caveat. Base your idea of "healthy" on sensible, well-established basics: moving regularly, eating mostly whole foods, sleeping enough, managing stress, staying connected. Not on the fear-mongering wellness influencers who sell anxiety and supplements alongside it.

A healthy person isn't gripped by fear over every bite or biomarker. They're calm, consistent, and living their life. That's the identity worth growing into.

Action Step: Next time you're on the fence about a choice today, pause and ask, "What would a healthy person do?" Then do that thing.
