Reclaiming Your Power: Focusing on What You Can Influence

There are many things in life we cannot fully control: other people’s choices, unexpected events, the past, uncertainty, or how everything will unfold.

When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy for our attention to become consumed by everything outside of our control. And while this is understandable, it can also leave us feeling powerless, anxious, stuck, or emotionally drained.

One thing that can support resilience is gently shifting more of our focus toward what we can influence.

This doesn’t mean pretending difficult realities don’t exist or blaming ourselves for hard circumstances. It means remembering that even within uncertainty, we still have areas where our choices, actions, boundaries, mindset, care, and responses matter.

Psychologists sometimes call this an “internal locus of control,” the belief that our actions can meaningfully influence parts of our lives.

This mindset is often linked to greater resilience, emotional well-being, and empowerment because it helps us move from helplessness toward agency.

Ways to reconnect with your sense of influence:

🧠 Separate what’s within your control from what isn’t
🌱 Focus on small actions instead of needing complete certainty
💛 Remember that boundaries are a form of influence too
🫶 Invest energy where it can actually create movement or care
•⏳ Practice responding instead of only reacting

You do not need control over everything to have power in your life.

Sometimes healing begins by remembering: even small choices matter.

Action step: Write down one thing causing stress right now, then identify one small piece of it that is within your influence.

Quality vs. Quantity: You Need Both

Ten thousand steps. Eight hours of sleep. Five servings of vegetables. Many people have turned healthy living into a checklist and, in doing so, missed half of the picture.

Fragmented sleep will leave you foggy, no matter how long you were in bed.

Consuming the majority of your diet from ultra-processed food, even though you hit every macro target, can leave your body undernourished.

Exercise done out of punishment rather than care creates a negative association with exercise and makes it much more difficult to create the habits.

But quantity isn't meaningless either. A single whole-foods-based meal doesn't undo a week of skipping them.

The key is understanding that both quality and quantity are important for longevity, and figuring out which you’re missing can be useful to help make improvements in your well-being.

Action Step: Take a look at your habits and see if you are lacking quality and or quantity when it comes to your nutrition, exercise or sleep? If so, what is one thing you can do to improve it this week?
