Psychological Richness: A Different Way to Live Well

We’re often taught that a “good life” is about feeling happy and finding purpose (hedonic and eudemonic well-being). However, research has shown there’s a third dimension of well-being that offers an alternative access point to living well: psychological richness, a life shaped by varied experience, novelty, and openness to new experience.

A happy life is often described as a life that holds a great deal of pleasant experiences. A purposeful life is thought of as a life of devotion and service. Both are important components of well-being, but while both can be rewarding, studies have shown that some still find themselves stuck in a cycle that feels boring and repetitive, causing researchers to ask “What’s missing?”

Psychological richness is the answer, adding a different angle to well-being that, when combined with the other two, offers a sense of wholeness. A psychologically rich life isn’t always comfortable; it includes engaging in activities, learning, and experiences that can challenge your current perspectives and worldview. However, it leads to a sense of expansion, adding the beauty of depth and complexity to life. It asks us to find aliveness in our experiences and to keep growing.

The beauty is, you don’t need to choose one type of well-being; you can engage in all three. What I love about this is if you are going through a period that doesn’t feel satisfying, you can seek out any of the three realms of well-being to improve your life.

What psychological richness can look like:

  • 😝Richness includes both ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ emotions: this means a good life is accessible withOUT the pressure to be constantly “happy.”

  • 🌍 Choosing openness and novelty: Trying something unfamiliar that stretches your perspective

  • 💬 Having the hard conversation: Leaning into connection and curiosity instead of avoiding discomfort

  • 🎨 Creating bravely: Explore different modes of expression, even if it feels vulnerable

  • 🧭 Letting life encourage growth: Allowing experiences (pleasant or not) to deepen who you are

  • 📚Learn new perspectives and allow yourself to evolve: Value thinking in new ways and make it okay to change your opinion

Sometimes what nourishes us most isn’t ease, but aliveness.

Action step: This week, choose one experience that gently stretches you: initiate a meaningful conversation, try something new, or step into a growth edge. Notice how depth (not just comfort) can be fulfilling.

How Eating Colours Makes You Healthier 🌈🥗

The colours in whole foods aren’t just pretty; they’re biological signals. Different pigments in fruits and vegetables represent different phytonutrients that benefit you in different ways.

  • 🍅Reds and purples help protect the heart, lungs and brain.

  • 🥬Greens are rich in cancer-blocking chemicals and support cellular repair.

  • 🍊Oranges and yellows support intercellular communication and can strengthen immunity.

  • 🫐Blue and purple have powerful antioxidants that are believed to delay cellular aging and are great for heart health.

  • 🧅Whites aid gut and immune health.

Each colour brings a different set of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, vitamins, and minerals. No single food provides everything you need, so it is important to eat a wide range of colourful wholefoods throughout each day.

If you can do this, then you will reduce oxidative stress, improve metabolic function, and feed a more diverse gut microbiome, which supports long-term health.

Action step: At your next meal, build your plate with at least three different colours of whole foods. A small variety today creates powerful protection over time.
