Why Joy Is Regulating: How Pleasure Strengthens Your Nervous System

In stressful seasons, joy can feel inaccessible, unnecessary, or even indulgent. When there’s a lot happening in the world, or in your own life, it can seem more responsible to stay serious, productive, or focused on what’s wrong.

But, darling, your nervous system doesn’t regulate through pressure. It regulates through safety.

Joy is one of the clearest biological signals of safety your body can experience. It shifts your physiology, softens stress responses, and reminds your system that you are not under threat in this moment.

This doesn’t require big happiness or perfect circumstances. Small, ordinary moments count and the more you take joy in them, the more noticeable they become!

Here’s why joy matters more than we often realize:

🧠 Joy releases dopamine, which supports motivation and forward movement
🤍 Positive connection increases oxytocin, helping the body feel safe and supported
• 🌬️ Laughter and lightness reduce stress hormones like cortisol
👀 Enjoyment shifts attention away from threat-scanning and toward presence
🌿 Micro-moments of pleasure widen your emotional range, building resilience over time

Joy isn’t denial. It’s nervous system nourishment. In fact, the more intense or demanding your season is, the more intentionally you may need small, regulating moments.

Ways to invite micro-joy into your day:
• ☀️ Step outside and feel sunlight on your face for 60 seconds
🎶 Play one song that shifts your mood
• ☕ Fully savor your first sip of coffee or tea
📸 Revisit a photo that makes you smile
🐾 Notice something ordinary and beautiful (light, color, movement, your dog’s face…)

You don’t need to earn joy. And it doesn’t have to be big to matter. Joy teaches your body that it’s safe to soften.

Action step: Choose one small, sensory moment of joy today and linger in it for at least 30 seconds.

Stimulation Breaks for a Healthier Brain 🧠

Your muscles aren’t meant to be pushed to the limit every waking hour, and neither is your noggin. 🧠

While deep sleep is when your brain does most of its metabolic “clean-up,” quiet wakeful rest reduces cognitive load and supports recovery of your prefrontal cortex, which is the part responsible for focus, decision-making, and emotional regulation.

Constant stimulation can keep your brain in a heightened state of cognitive load, which over time may reduce focus, strain emotional regulation, and impair productivity.

Short breaks from screens and work allow your brain to reset and restore mental clarity. It can also help consolidate memories, helping to lock in what you’ve learned so you can actually remember it later. When you constantly jump from one stimulus to another, your brain has less opportunity to “file” information properly.

By taking time to be and not being focused on a task, your brain shifts into a different mode that supports reflection, creativity, and connecting ideas. That’s why good thoughts often pop up in the shower or on a quiet walk.

Doing nothing isn’t laziness; it can actually be a powerful strategy for neural recovery.

Action Step: Take 5–10 minutes today to sit quietly without your phone and let your mind wander.

Consider what “nourishing” feels like today: a guilt free break, an extra glass of water, a little extra movement, a deep slow breath, adding in an extra veggie, or whatever your body smiles to think about.
