Fortune Telling (Future Tripping): Escaping Thought Traps for Better Mental Health

Our minds constantly try to predict the future to create a sense of certainty and safety. But sometimes that turns into fortune telling: assuming negative outcomes before they happen and treating those predictions like facts.

Future tripping can increase anxiety, avoidance, hopelessness, and self-doubt. It can stop us from trying, connecting, speaking up, or taking meaningful risks because our mind has already decided how things will end.

The future is influenced by many things, including things you cannot yet see.

Common ways fortune telling shows up:
🔮 Predicting failure before trying
😬 Assuming conversations or events will go badly
📉 Believing difficult feelings will last forever
🚫 Avoiding opportunities because of imagined outcomes
• 🌧️ Treating fears about the future as certainty instead of possibility

Ways to gently ground future-focused thinking:
🥠 Ask: Am I predicting the future or observing facts?
🌱 Leave room for outcomes you cannot currently imagine
🔄 Focus on what you can do in the present moment
🧠 Remember that thoughts are predictions, not prophecies
💙 Allow uncertainty to exist without immediately filling it with fear

Your mind may try to write the ending before the story unfolds. But the future is rarely as fixed as fear makes it seem.

Action step: The next time you catch yourself future tripping, pause and ask: What are the actual facts available to me right now?

Determine this Before HOW

Before you worry about the how, it's worth getting clear on your why and your what because that can help determine the how.

Here's something that takes the pressure off: there's no single perfect why waiting to be found, wrapped up in a neat bow. You can have many, and that's completely fine. Wanting to keep up with your kids, feel confident in your body, protect your health for the decades ahead, and have more energy day to day, they can all be true at once.

And some days some of those whys will be much more motivating than the others.

What matters is knowing which ones actually move you. Dig past the surface answers to the reasons that genuinely light a fire. Those are the ones to hold onto.

Then get specific about your what. Your what is the concrete outcome you're working toward: to squat your bodyweight, to walk a 5k without stopping, to have steady energy through the afternoon. Your why gives you the reason; your what gives you the target.

Then once those two are clear, the how, the plan and the daily actions have something to serve.

Action Step: Write down your top two or three whys, the ones that actually move you, and one clear what. Keep them somewhere you'll see them when your motivation dips.
