Cognitive Dissonance and Changing Beliefs

Human beings like consistency. We want our beliefs, actions, identity, and choices to fit together in a way that makes sense.

So when new information challenges something we believe, value, or have built part of our identity around, it can create psychological discomfort. This experience is called cognitive dissonance.

Cognitive dissonance can show up when we realize something we believed may not fully align with reality anymore. Or when our actions conflict with our values. Or when growth asks us to rethink old perspectives, habits, or identities.

This discomfort can feel frustrating, emotional, defensive, confusing, or even threatening. And because the brain prefers certainty and coherence, many people instinctively resist information that challenges existing beliefs.

But discomfort does not automatically mean something is wrong.

Sometimes discomfort is part of learning, growing, healing, and becoming more aware.

Changing your mind, expanding your understanding, or evolving your beliefs is an important part of becoming who you’re meant to be. It’s an important part of growth, purpose, and connecting in community.

Ways to navigate cognitive dissonance with more compassion:

🧠 Notice defensiveness without immediately judging yourself for it
🌱 Stay curious instead of rushing to certainty
💛 Allow room for complexity: people and ideas are rarely all-or-nothing
🫶 Remember that growth often requires reevaluating old beliefs
•⏳ Give yourself time to process instead of forcing immediate clarity

You are allowed to evolve. Growth does not require pretending you’ve always known everything. Sometimes wisdom comes from being willing to rethink what you once believed.

Action step: Reflect on one belief, perspective, or assumption you’ve changed your mind about over the years. What helped that growth happen?

Your Playbook To Hit Your Daily Veggie & Fruit Targets

Canada's Food Guide keeps it refreshingly simple: make half your plate vegetables and fruit at every meal. No counting servings, no math. But "eat more veggies" is easy to nod at and for many hard to do, so here's the playbook I give my clients.

  1. Before you plate anything else, cover half with vegetables or fruit. When that's your starting point, the portion of everything else naturally falls into place.

  2. Make breakfast count. This is the meal most people skip produce entirely. A handful of berries in your oats or some spinach in your eggs, and you're ahead before the day even starts.

  3. Keep the quick and easy options stocked. Frozen vegetables, baby carrots, bagged salad, and pre-cut fruit all count just as much as fresh. Convenience is what makes a habit stick when you're tired.

  4. Add colour. Aim for a couple of different colours on the plate. Variety gives you a wider range of nutrients, and it's an easy target to eyeball.

Action Step: At your very next meal, build the plate veggies-first. Fill half, then add the rest. Do that one meal at a time, and the daily target takes care of itself.
