Calming Anxiety Through Physical Support: Sensory & Body-Based Regulation

When anxiety spikes, logic alone often isn’t always enough to calm it. That’s because anxiety lives in the nervous system and body, not just in our thoughts.

Sensory and physical regulation techniques can help signal safety to your nervous system, reduce overwhelm, and bring you back into a grounded state, especially when your mind feels busy or spiralling. You don’t need to do these perfectly. The goal is to experiment and notice what feels supportive.

Sensory-based ways to ease anxiety:

🧸 Deep pressure or weight (for grounding): Try a weighted blanket, or a DIY alternative like a backpack, weighted books, or resting an exercise plate across your chest and/or lap.
🤗 Compression or firm touch: Wrap yourself tightly in a blanket, wear snug clothing, or give yourself a firm hug.
💪 Resistance & strength-based movement: Carry groceries, do wall push-ups, slow squats, or grip a stress ball to release tension.
🔥 Temperature shifts: Hold a warm mug, take a warm shower, or splash cool water on your face to reset your system.
•🛋️ Cozy & safe environments: Dim lights, soft textures, calming music, familiar scents, or creating a “nest” space.
👃 Sensory anchors: Use scent, texture, or sound as a grounding point when your mind feels scattered.

Your nervous system often needs to feel safe, not just reassurance.

Action step: Try one sensory regulation tool this week and notice how your body responds.

The Inflammation Loop: How Aging Can Trap the Immune System in Overdrive 🔁🔥

As we age, the immune system can become less balanced and new research in Nature Aging helps explain why.

Scientists found that in some cases, certain immune cells called macrophages can get stuck in a self-reinforcing inflammation loop. Aging macrophages produce a protein called GDF3, which signals back to the same cells, keeping them locked in an inflammatory state. Over time, this leads to higher levels of inflammation, worsening immune responses and increasing vulnerability to serious conditions like sepsis.

This loop doesn’t just create short-term inflammation; it causes lasting genetic changes that make immune cells more likely to stay reactive.

We can do things ourselves to lower inflammation and prevent chronic inflammation, like eating a whole-foods-based diet, exercising, sleeping well, hydrating, avoiding chronic stress, etc., and tomorrow I will go over some herbs that can help too.

Action step: Eat lots of whole foods today!
