Boxing Day & Overconsumption: Making Choices That Feel Like Yours

Boxing Day marketing is designed to spark urgency: limited-time deals, “must-haves,” dramatic discounts, and messaging that subtly says you’re missing out if you don’t buy something. But, the marketing isn’t truly about your needs, it’s about driving consumption.

You deserve choices rooted in your actual desires, not pressure, habit, or marketing psychology. This isn’t about shame. It’s about reclaiming your agency in a season that often pushes you into autopilot.

Here are some tips to help you stay in touch with what you want when everything else is screaming “buy now!”.

How to make aligned choices:

  • 🛑 Pause before purchasing. A 10-second check-in interrupts urgency. Ask: “Do I want this or am I reacting to the sale?”. If you’re buying online, you may even let your cart sit for 15 min before checking out.

  • 🧠 Name the feeling driving the impulse. Boredom? Stress? Loneliness? Excitement? Awareness helps you choose more intentionally.

  • Try the ‘Would I want this at full price?’ test. If the answer is no, it’s likely the sale talking, not your desire.

  • 🪞 Connect to your values. Think: “Does this support the life I’m building?” Let the answer guide your next step.

Action step: Before buying anything on Boxing Day, pause and ask yourself one question: “Is this choice aligned with what I truly want?”

Fitness Friday: Improve Mobility With Frequency 🤸‍♂️

Your mobility is very important to maintain as you age. You either use it or lose it, and it is much easier to maintain than it is to get your mobility back (But I have something that can help on both fronts!). 

When I used to work in a corporate environment, my coworkers and I got on the topic of mobility and flexibility. Someone said they couldn’t touch their toes anymore. I believed I could until I reached down and could barely get to my knees… This was a wake-up call. I realized I needed to start taking my mobility seriously.

Within a couple of months, I could touch my toes again, and my strategy was so easy that anyone could do it. I would try to tough my toes for 30 seconds in the shower each day and would do it 1-2 more times during the day. That’s it!

This is the power of frequency for mobility. If you can do it more often, you will get quicker results. Instead of holding a stretch for 90 seconds 1x/day, see if you can do it 3x during the day for 30 seconds each. Same total time, just more often. 

These short bouts tell your body more often, “hey, we need this range of motion.”

If your friend asks you for a favour once, you’ll eventually get to it, but if they text you multiple times a day, you’ll prioritize it to get it done. 

Same thing here, more frequent stimulus, more nudges to the body, and the results come faster, plus your joints will feel better, and you’ll feel less stiff. 

Action Step: Determine one area of your body you want to improve your mobility in, then pick a stretch you can do a couple of times a day for about 30 seconds each time and do it!
